Green Maintenance

Following the closure of the green at the end of the season, extensive work has been carried out. To start with, the green was scarified and the thatch removed. It was then hollow tined and the resulting plugs were cleared away. A few days later the green was cut in readiness for a visit by the Ilfracombe Golf Club green keepers who have recently branched out into helping bowls clubs.

Upon their arrival they unloaded the top dressing sacks and started off proceedings by seeding the whole green. They then loaded up a motorised top dressing machine with ten 25kg bags at a time and spread it evenly across the green. To ensure an even application, they also flew around the rink in all directions on what can only be described a motorised go cart with a 5 foot broom on the back! They then finished the day by applying a fertiliser, just in time, as it then started to rain.

Its now mid October and the seed is starting to germinate leaving the rink looking very green and fertile. It will be interesting to see the results at the start of next season. By involving the Ilfracombe team has meant that all the work has been carried out quicker than Ivor and our own green team would have managed, as we don't have access to that sort of machinery.

A big thank you should go to all those involved.
